Thom Hogan’s Nikon D3100 review

Posted on March 22nd, 2011 in Reviews | No Comments »

What’s Thom has to say about Nikon D3100? it’s a bit late but hey.. this is Thom Hogan’s review, a well known Nikon expert and great photographer too.

The D3100 is about at the D90 level in terms of image quality in most respects, but the bar moved. That makes the “value” of the D3100 a bit less than it probably should be. At US$499 it would be a great value. At it’s current price of $599 (with kit lens), it’s an average value. Obviously, over time that price will come down. But so too will expectations go up. So pardon me if I see just a little ambivalent in my recommendation of the D3100. There’s just enough change here to get me to like the low-end Nikon DSLR again, but not quite enough change to make me excited about it.

and what he thinks about the Guide Mode:

Whoever wrote this system needs a crash course in basic photography. So will the user who tries to master it.

On the other hand, he loves the camera’s AF performance, great image quality and small body.

Latest Nikon D3100 review

Posted on March 4th, 2011 in Reviews | No Comments »

Several websites has published their Nikon D3100 review online. Here they are ( and some conclusion from the review )

  • PCWorld Australia ( link )
The Nikon D3100 may only be an entry-level SLR camera, but it’s capable of supplying very good image quality and it also has the ability to shoot HD video. It’s a comfortable camera to hold and an easy one to use, and its in-built guides allow you to learn how to use its manual features on-the-fly. It’s a great model for a novice user.
  • DigitalArtsOnline ( link )
The D3100 is an entry-level DSLR on the higher end of that category’s price range. However, it has a great set of features for a beginner photographer and decent image quality. If you’re primarily interested in the D3100 for its new movie making abilities, you may want to wait until the continuous autofocus feature is polished.
  • DigitalCamera HQ ( link )
This is perhaps the most well-balanced entry-level dSLR out right now. There aren’t any deal-breaking flaws. Nikon knows how to design a comfortable, intuitive shooter, and even first-timers should feel relatively comfortable shooting this after a bit of practice

New Nikon D3100 full review now available online at TrustedReviews.com. Overall , the camera is recommended especially for anyone who want to step up to DSLR world. score : 9 out of 10 .. not bad :)

In summation then, the D3100 feels solidly constructed when gripped in the palm, is fast and responsive, and is capable of some sharp and colourful results thanks to combination of sensor and supplied 18-55mm test lens and is fairly priced. As such the D3100 is something of a no brainer choice for anyone who doesn’t already own a digital SLR, but desires the more professional in appearance results that such a set up can bring.

Jared Polin , the author of FroKnowsPhoto.com , made a short review on Nikon D3100 DSLR. Overall , he thinks the Nikon D3100 is a perfect camera for beginner.

I can honestly say that this camera goes beyond any past entry level camera Nikon has ever made and for a reasonable price.

DPReview Nikon D3100 review is out

Posted on December 22nd, 2010 in Reviews | No Comments »

Finally , DPReview published Nikon D3100 review on their website. The camera got overall score: 72 of 100 and a Silver Award. Basically , Nikon D3100 is for first time DSLR users . Image quality is what you can expect from a DSLR with decent ISO performances. Manual controls are also a plus for users who want to step into photography world.

With the addition of video and live view, Nikon has given its entry-level DSLR all the features its predecessor seemed to be missing. The result is an excellent beginners camera that encourages the user to grow into it whatever their existing level of knowledge. However, it’s not alone in offering this and, though it’s a great DSLR, there are plenty of equally attractive mirrorless alternatives.

Good for: First time DSLR users who want a camera that will encourage them to make the most of its capabilities.

Not for: People wanting a camera that behaves just like their existing compact. Users for whom compactness is a priority.
