Just doing a quick compare of Nikon D3100 vs D5100. FYI, Nikon D5100 is not officially released yet but some press release has been leaked from DigitalHomeThoughts.com , a Canadian camera website review. Images also has been leaked so we can surely bet that the camera is real !

Nikon D5100 clearly has some major improvements over previous D5000 and better than D3100. But , watchout for the price!  The $999 price tag for Body+Kit lens 18-105mm VR lens may a bit expensive for some people.

D3100 or D5100 ? ah, tough question. My recommendation if you have budget , go for Nikon D5100. If you’re new to DSLR and has limited budget , the Nikon D3100 is still fun to learn with. Image quality is probably almost similar except that Nikon D5100 has the Nikon D7000 sensor so it will perform better at low-light situation.

If you love shooting videos , go for D5100 ! Nikon clearly engineered the camera for video functions. The swivel LCD display and external microphone support will come in handy. If you have limited budget , the Nikon D3100 still favourable for video. Although it doesnt have a microphone input jack , the camera can records HD movie at 1080 / 24fps. Both Nikon D3100 and D5100 can autofocus when recording videos.
