Active D-Lighting feature on Nikon D3100 effectively helps balance extreme lighting situations by adjusting shadow and highlight detail independently. The old conventional D-Lighting method of simply expanding dynamic range is not employed in compensation. Instead, localised tone control technology is utilised to prevent images from looking flat with low contrast. As a result, lost highlight and shadows are well-compensated while maintaining proper contrast.
